Question 1

Is a dead zone the same thing as stick drift?

Accepted Answer

No. Drift is the stick reporting a position away from center while you are not touching it. A dead zone is travel that produces no output change. They compound — a resting offset makes the dead zone look bigger than it is — so every result on this page splits into a drift part and a travel part. Large drift part: fix the drift. Large travel part: the dead zone is real.

Question 2

What dead zone size is normal for a controller?

Accepted Answer

Up to about 0.05 is tight and typical of a healthy stick — below every common in-game default. Console game defaults usually sit near 0.08, so a stick up to roughly 0.10 feels fine in most games. Above 0.10 you will notice floaty aim in shooters even with the in-game deadzone minimized, and that is the point where calibration or repair becomes worth the effort.

Question 3

Why does my controller feel fine in some games and floaty in others?

Accepted Answer

Because games apply their own software deadzone on top of the raw stick values. A competitive shooter with a 0.02 deadzone exposes every bit of hardware looseness, while an adventure game with a 0.15 default hides it completely. The hardware did not change — the software lens did. Compare the in-game deadzone settings before you conclude the pad got worse.

Question 4

Can a browser really measure the physical dead zone?

Accepted Answer

It measures the values the operating system reports, not the potentiometer itself, so the number is a behavioral estimate rather than a factory calibration. That is enough for the decisions that matter: comparing sticks, tracking wear over months, and backing a warranty claim — the same standard the drift test on this site uses. Keep the pushes slow and repeat them, and the numbers converge on a stable value.

Question 5

My probe results differ every time — which number do I trust?

Accepted Answer

Trust the largest value that shows up consistently in the same direction. A fast push skips through part of the dead zone and underestimates it; a slow, steady push walks the axis through the whole silent travel. Run three to five slow pushes per direction and take the largest repeated number — that is the honest reading.

Question 6

How do I make a large dead zone smaller?

Accepted Answer

In order: lower the in-game deadzone setting first (instant, free, and often the whole story); then run the manufacturer calibration tool — Xbox Accessories on Windows, console-side recalibration for DualSense and Switch Pro — which re-teaches the stick where center is. If calibration cannot pull the effective dead zone back under 0.10, the center region of the potentiometer module is worn, and the module is a replaceable part on most popular controllers.
